Building the business case for cloud computing

In one of our previous posts we addressed some of the perceived concerns about cloud computing.

Talking to our customers it is clear that these concerns often come not from IT but from other areas of the business. To help advocates make the business case to the rest of the organisation, we thought now would be a good time to give you the top three benefits of cloud computing:

1. Lower costs

Firstly, take a look at how much you are paying for physical servers, including hardware, energy and IT management. Then add the costs of wholesale license agreements for enterprise applications. Switching infrastructure, middleware and software to the cloud will immediately reduce your up-front capital outlay and energy bills as well as ensuring you only pay for what you need.

2. State-of-the-art security

Fifty per cent of respondents to a Forrester survey cited security as a reason to avoid cloud computing. However, cloud data storage, transmission and management protocols are advancing at such a rate that most businesses operating localised security procedures will struggle to keep up. The data centres hosting this data are also categorised in terms of resilience and physical security, making it easier than ever before to compare levels of protection.

3. Improved productivity

With topics such as Mobility and Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) at the top of the agenda for many businesses, questions are still asked about the potential for data breaches on personal devices. There are plenty of sophisticated encryption and ID technologies that will prevent most breaches and even erase data in the event of a device theft. Rather than being frustrated by slow log-ins or the inability to access information away from the office, empowering staff to work on the go via cloud applications can lead to improved morale and significant productivity gains.

These are just the top three. Other benefits to consider include improved environmental credentials, greater business agility, easier IT management and future-proofing of your IT infrastructure.

In other words, lots of reasons to convert the doubters.
