Are you ready for Cyber Security month?

ENISA: the European Union Agency for Network and Information Security is making October all about Cyber Security. Across twenty five countries and over a number of events, talks and other content, ENISA hopes to increase the awareness of Cyber Security for Europe’s businesses.

It’s a laudable programme from ENISA. Online protection is something that every company needs to be aware of and participating in. While IT continues to move to a service basis, rather than one based around in-house teams, the need for knowing what a company needs in terms of security is more important than ever. Companies need to be able to discuss frankly and in detail what protection their data needs.

This means that training around the importance of data security is no longer just the responsibility of IT staff within a business. A workforce that is remote may use mobile devices to access company and customer data. If they lose that device then that data may be compromised. Even a lost phone can present a security issue.

We would encourage companies to really think about the weak points in their data security. Who has access to what and how freely is that access given? Are passwords changed regularly? Who in the company has ‘Admin’ rights? What happens when people leave your company? How many mobile devices do you have? These very simple questions should help you form a picture about what protection your company may need.
