COLT completes next generation Ethernet network

COLT, a leading European provider of business communications, has completed the rollout of its next generation Ethernet platform, which offers customers across Europe higher bandwidth and improved performance from their data services.

COLT launched the initial phase of its Carrier Ethernet-based Multi-Service Platform (MSP) in London, Paris and Frankfurt in 2008 and has now extended it to a further 31 cities. COLT’s platform is used to deliver metro Ethernet services, national and international Ethernet, IP VPN and Internet Access services.

“COLT has always placed Ethernet at the heart of our next generation solutions strategy and this new network extends our leadership of carrier Ethernet and will help our customers improve the way they deliver their applications across Europe”, said Alireza Mahmoodshahi, COLT’s Chief Technology Officer.

COLT has more than 15 years experience providing Ethernet services to business customers and has used that knowledge to build a platform that meets their exacting needs. The new platform delivers dedicated bandwidth, provides enhanced resilience and minimises latency so customers get the best performance from the applications on which their business relies.

“Market conditions have changed quite dramatically this year and, more than ever, our customers are looking for greater efficiency, savings and performance from any IT investment they make,” said Detlef Spang, Managing Director, Major Enterprise, COLT. “Our next generation network is designed specifically to cater for our business community, using the very latest technology on the market. We have had a hugely positive response to the functionality we can now offer and we are delighted to offer it to customers across Europe.”

COLT’s MSP is designed to offer customers high bandwidth services with lower latency, lower jitter and improved resilience. The carrier Ethernet transport solution and services are centrally managed and monitored, allowing COLT to simplify the delivery and management of end-to-end Ethernet services to its customers. The technology, supplied by Nokia Siemens Networks, uses a single box capable of delivering up to 16 services at speeds of up to 1Gbps. This single box saves space and power at the customer premises and means additional services or upgrades can be delivered without the need for hardware changes.

Andy Tempest, Account Director for UK operators at Nokia Siemens Networks, commented, “The MSP solution will enable COLT to make the highest levels of service performance available to their customers by reaping the benefits of carrier Ethernet transport with enhanced flexibility, scalability and reliability.”

COLT’s MSP builds on the company’s long-standing expertise in Ethernet services. 80 percent of COLT’s top 500 customers already use its Ethernet services and it has won the Metro Ethernet Forum’s European Ethernet Service Provider of the Year award for four years running and was awarded Light Reading’s Ethernet Expo Europe award for Service Provider of the Year – Best Product Portfolio. MSP is one of a number of investments COLT is making in its next generation solutions strategy in 2009. In addition, in their recent ‘Ethernet Services: Global Market Drivers & Winning Portfolios’ report, Current Analysis identified COLT as the leading provider of Ethernet services in Europe.
