Shipments of 4G LTE devices reach the 100 million mark in 2012

Shipments of mobile devices designed for 4G long-term evolution (LTE) networks reached 103 million during 2012, according to new figures from ABI. The market researcher said that the successes of Apple’s iPhone 5 and Samsung’s Galaxy 3 have greatly helped this growth.

For SMEs looking to increase productivity, the growth of 4G has been a cause for celebration, with remote working enhanced by faster download speeds, the ability to stream data and clearer video conferencing.

However, whilst device growth was strong, it wasn’t matched by a growth in new 4G mobile contracts. ABI found that not every user was choosing to upgrade their contract to receive the latest in mobile internet, but suppliers “should not be panicking” just yet. The report said that customers were currently “seeding the market” with 4G handsets, and expected new-sign ups and conversion of 3G subscribers to gather pace throughout 2013 and into 2014.
