Business transformation is putting the IT department to the test

As the world of business continues to evolve, we all face the challenge of trying to keep up with technology and the increasing pressures from this fast paced environment. But perhaps no one more so than today’s CIO.CIOs need to continuously update business models in line with innovation and effective strategies, as a result of the explosion of social and mobile technology leading to a 24/7 global workforce. For IT, this means not just the management of heavily relied on current technology, but also ideally being ready to adapt the IT infrastructure as the business transforms. Our new research report showed that 79% of IT decision makers have experienced a major business change in the last three years which impacted IT. Such transformation undoubtedly puts pressure on the IT department, so you won’t be surprised to hear that one in five suggest their data centre structures are unable to keep pace with change.Today investment in IT infrastructure tends to go one of two ways: either it lags behind traditional infrastructure due to a fear of large-scale change, or it leaps ahead as leaders scramble to implement the latest technology. As you might have guessed, neither is ideal. With this in mind, it’s clear that CIOs need to change their way of thinking – if they haven’t already. They need to ensure that tech transformation matches and supports the strategic direction of the organisation. They need to be fully aware of the business cycle so that they can synchronise IT strategy with the plans of the business as a whole. What’s more they also need to manage external drivers of change – regulations, competitors, M&A, or large-scale infrastructure innovations – and perhaps most importantly, the increasing workforce mobility and managing BYOD among employees. Sounds like a big job!Sure, it may sound a bit daunting, but with this increased pressure comes added control for the CIO, as well as greater influence over navigating change – so it’s not all bad! They key is to create a collaborative environment where technology is seen as a strategic tool to increase flexibility, rather than something that holds back or puts pressure on business transformation. Yes, business transformation is putting IT and the data centre under pressure, but it also provides opportunities for those CIOs who are willing to focus on innovating for success. To learn more about why businesses need to view technology as a strategic tool you can download a new Colt article ‘Strategic IT and Business Transformation’, read our report ‘The Four Forces of Data Centre Disruption’ or look at this summary infographic on flickr. We would also welcome your thoughts and experiences of business transformation – is it putting your IT and the data centre under pressure?
