Colt to expand its data centre capacity in the Netherlands

Amsterdam, 9th July 2013

Colt, Europe’s leading information delivery platform, today announced that it is expanding its carrier neutral facility in the south of The Netherlands with the creation of an additional 1,000 m2 and 1.65MW of data centre capacity. Using Colt’s unique ftec Data Centre modular design and deployment model, the capacity will be fully deployed by the end of September, enabling Colt to meet a growing market demand in the region for secure and flexible data centre solutions. It follows an initial deployment of 3.3MW earlier this year.

The facility is strategically located in Roosendaal between the major cities of Rotterdam and Antwerp, where it acts as a key hub for the delivery of Colt’s low latency services in both The Netherlands and Belgium.

Colt will use the new data centre capacity to target the region’s growing colocation market, offering businesses data centre services that can grow in line with their businesses. With CIOs coming under increasing pressure to reduce costs, Colt sees significant opportunites to meet the needs of companies looking to minimise upfront capital expenditure, while moving toward an Opex model with the ability to scale in line with their business requirements.

Adriaan Oosthoek, Executive Vice President of Colt Data Centre Services, said: “Demand for greater cost efficiency continues to drive IT investment decisions for many businesses in the region and this is translating into increased demand for colocation services of all sizes. By putting flexibility right at the heart of our data centre solutions, we are able to address this demand quickly and cost effectively from our facility which is strategically located in Roosendaal between two of Europe’s major economic and transportation hubs.”

“Over the coming years, we plan to continue to expand the facilty, which has an ultimate capacity of 10,000 m2, providing secure and scalable solutions that allow businesses to remain competitive as their data centre and IT requirements evolve.”

Colt’s facility in The Netherlands has an industry-leading design Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.21 which greatly reduces both its environmental footprint and total operating expenditure. The award winning design allows customers complete flexibility from commercial agreements to mixed density compute (up to 20kW per rack) within the same facility. This is achieved through its unique design, including fresh air cooling available most of the year. The facility has a 32MVA power connection, ensuring scalability of the energy supply as the data centre grows in size and requirements.

The new Colt ftec data centre – including all power and cooling elements – will be constructed using modern component-based production line techniques at Colt’s manufacturing facility in Northern England before being shipped to the Netherlands and assembled onsite ready to go live in Q4. This unique approach provides Colt with the flexibility to expand the data centre in increments with increasing demand.
