Uptime Institute awards Colt with Tier III Design Certification for Modular Data Centre

London, 3rd September 2012

Colt, Europe’s leading information platform, has been awarded the Uptime Institute’s Tier III Certification of Design Documents for two halls inside its London 3 facility. The award certifies that the design meets all the requirements set out by the Institute’s global benchmarking system for Concurrent Maintainability and thereby minimises the risk of a service disruption by ensuring 99.98 percent uptime capability.

The Tier III Design Certification is an independent assessment of the capability of the design to continue to sustain computer room operations during any maintenance activity. This requires considerable attention to detail in the design and is awarded only to the best in class.

“Colt’s modular design approach to enterprise-class availability, as demonstrated by the Uptime Institute’s Tier III Design Certification, demonstrates an important step forward for the industry—a robust infrastructure solution with rapid speed of deployment,” says Vince Renaud, Uptime Institute Senior Tier Certification Authority. “The rigorous review inherent to Uptime Institute Design Certification assures clients that each and every detail of a high-availability design is in place.”

“Colt’s flagship facility in London is renowned for its operational excellence, state-of-the-art technology, resilience and security,” says Guy Ruddock, VP Design and Delivery at Colt. “As the international language of accountability and certification for the data centre industry, this award distinguishes Colt from self-certified data centre providers, whose Tier III claims for concurrent maintainability are often dubious.”

Colt’s unique modular approach is carried throughout the design of UPS and Critical Cooling Systems. This allows the maintenance, removal or replacement of critical components without affecting the resilience levels, therefore still being fully resilient against a single failure without the cost of installing 2N+1 infrastructure.

Earlier this year Colt became the first data centre operator in Europe to be accredited with the Uptime Institute’s Management & Operations (M&O) Stamp of Approval which it was awarded for its London 3 site.

London 3 is one of Colt’s flagship facilities and is renowned for its operational excellence, state-of-the-art technology, resilience and security. Sited 40km (25 miles) from the centre of London, the facility potentially provides over 10,500m2 of data centre space with a total power provision of 33 MVA. The facility is just outside of London’s major ring-road, the M25. This means that if there is an emergency lock-down across London, or the M25 has been completely closed, the data centre is still accessible.
