Preparations for the International Berlin Film Festival are in full swingAt the Potsdamer Platz in Berlin we can already see the first signs of the big event to come. The 65th International Film Festival, known as the Berlinale, will be taking place there from Feb 5th – 15th. The preparations are in full swing, with the film office being turned into a ‘control centre’ for the event. Event experts, video software developers and also network engineers are settling in. The pre-selection of films for the various sections of the festival already started before Christmas. The panel has been watching around 6,000 films to be able to select this year’s masterpieces. The team at the Film Office is responsible not only for viewing the contributions, but also giving feedback to filmmakers, and preparing rooms for those selected presentations. They also have the digital keys in their hands that are used to backup all film data remotely. Colt provides the ‘digital heart’ of the Berlinale. In 2015 – seven years on from our first sponsorship of the festival – we can also see the benefits of the digitisation of the festival during the pre-selection phase, as the films are stored in the local Colt data center and transferred over Colt’s fibre optic network. This gives the team the opportunity to carefully test the infrastructure ahead of the big event. The technical team will grow to 40 employees by the start of the festival. The team has already configured the network, tested video technology and is gradually preparing the venues across the city. The press screenings begin this month, so there is no time to waste.
