Everybody seems to talk about “Big Data” these days. From an IT perspective this topic certainly is one of the key drivers; as challenges grow, the larger the portion of data that you need to store, analyse and consequently need to be make available for business needs. In addition to the storage challenge, large portions of data often need to be moved from A to B – replicating the files, giving users access or simply collecting data from everywhere around the globe to consolidate it.
At Colt we are regularly thinking about these topics – not just from a storage perspective but from a transport perspective as well.
For connecting Data Centres to other Data Centres Colt offers the High Speed Services (HSS) product offering. This provides a wide set of technologies and interfaces on one single platform for replicating data via Fibre Channel, ESCON, FICON, Wavelength or Ethernet services. (You can read more about that in our HSS blog.)
But Colt keep on investing in the Ethernet and Wavelength product offering as well – introducing new services on faster routes and deploying new equipment in a dual homed way.
We just launched a fifth route between London and Frankfurt increasing the resilience and diversity level as well as reducing the latency on that route significantly. Any connectivity needed between Amsterdam and London and Amsterdam and Frankfurt benefits from that deployment as well. Whilst we can offer better connectivity on the London – Amsterdam – Frankfurt route already today, later this year a new Iberian route, new backbone capacities in the Nordics and a new BeNeLux ring connecting seven Data Centres will follow as well.
Our services provided on an international topology will benefit in particular from these new and Gartner awarded backbone capabilities.
From our customers we know that Ethernet services are often the preferred choice due to its advantages in simplicity, cost and flexibility. In order to provide just as much bandwidth as our customers really need and want to pay for, Ethernet services are available from Colt at 1Gbps to 6Gbps, 10Gbps (LAN-PHY), 40Gbps and 100Gbps. All these services of course support industry standard Ethernet presentations and interface types, they are both available as unprotected and protected options.
Unprotected (SDH) Wavelength services complement our portfolio on short distances in our Metro Networks as well as on Colt’s international and closely meshed long distance network. Wavelength services are provided as 2.5Gbps (STM-16) and 10Gbps (STM-64 and WAN-PHY) options. A wide range of industry standard interfaces are supported in this case as well.
