Colt announces the deployment of additional fibre in Berlin

Nearly 500 additional connected buildings will be able to benefit from the new expansion with fast and secure connections of 100Gbps.

London, UK, Berlin, Germany, 11 October 2018Colt Technology Services today announced plans for an expansion of the Colt IQ Network in Berlin (Germany), to enable customers’ digital transformation in the region through on-demand and high bandwidth services. This latest expansion further extends Colt’s global footprint, which will connect more than 500 on net buildings and will see more than 100km of additional fibre being put into the ground in the German capital.

This important investment in the region will make sure that the Colt IQ Network will be capable of serving the growing connectivity requirements of digital enterprises. In Berlin, Colt has been operating its own Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) in since 1997. The Colt IQ Network is a 100Gbps optimised intelligent network distributed to over 850+ data centres and carrier hotels around the world providing best in class service and optimised for SDN, NFV and cloud services.

A recent survey of the Berlin Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) unveiled that 70% of the businesses based in Berlin require connectivity of 100 Mbps or more. The deep local presence of Colt enables the company to offer high bandwidth connectivity to the technology park of Berlin Adlershof. This is one of the most successful high-technology locations in Germany and Berlin’s largest media site. In addition, Potsdam will be connected to the Colt IQ Network.

Colt Technology Services is at an advanced stage of expanding its network to six Eastern European capital cities and Berlin will play an important role in this further expansion. The network will extend from Colt’s existing point of presence in Klagenfurt, Austria, eastwards towards Bratislava, Budapest, Bucharest to Sofia, and then back through Belgrade and Zagreb before completing the ring in Klagenfurt.

Carl Grivner, CEO, Colt Technology Services said: “Berlin is the fastest-growing business ecosystem in Europe. The expansion in the German capital is part of Colt’s wider expansion strategy, which aims to help customers across Europe, Asia and North America through agile and on-demand, high bandwidth solutions. We have connected 13 major cities in North America, including New York, San Francisco and Chicago, to Colt’s dense Asian and European metro networks. We also increased our coverage in Spain, adding 22 new provinces to our local reach in the country and we deployed more fibre in the city of Dublin; expanding our IQ Network to enable the digital transformation of businesses today and tomorrow.”

“The consistent expansion of fibre is an important prerequisite for the use of 5G technologies, as it forms the necessary backhaul infrastructure for the transfer rates possible according to this standard. With our investment, we are supporting Berlin on its way to becoming a digital metropolis and the Berlin start-up scene. Colt has a very special connection with Berlin because we have been a Digital Cinema Partner of the Internationale Filmfestspiele Berlin (Berlinale) since 2009 and are contributing to its digitisation. For Colt, Berlin as a city is important and continues to grow with the expansion announced today,” said Süleyman Karaman, Managing Director of Colt Technology Services GmbH in Germany.

In addition to Berlin, Colt has metropolitan area networks in Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Hanover, Cologne, Munich and Stuttgart. In total, more than 170 data centres and more than 6,200 office buildings and commercial centres are connected to the Colt network in Germany.
