Last week Microsoft Azure became generally available in Germany, bringing the total number of regions the cloud computing platform is available to 30 worldwide.

Enterprise customers have the option of private connectivity to Microsoft Cloud Germany via Azure ExpressRoute, with Colt as one of the first network service providers to provide support for a connection with greater reliability, faster speeds, lower latencies and more predictable performance than typical internet connections.

Tom Keane general manager for Microsoft Azure at Microsoft notes that this new German cloud provides a differentiated option to the Microsoft Cloud services already available across Europe, in that customer data in new datacenters in Magdeburg and Frankfurt adhere to German data handling regulations and give customers additional choices of how and where data is processed.

Essentially this creates increased opportunities for innovation and economic growth for highly regulated customers in Germany, the European Union (EU) and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA).

Cloud adoption is fast maturing in Germany, with 63 per cent of German organisations using some form of cloud, representing a 70 per cent increase from last year, according to a study carried out by IDC.

A total of 71 per cent of companies in Germany are pursuing a hybrid cloud strategy, with on premises private cloud spending projected to increase by 47 per cent over the next two years, according to IDC.

The analyst said cloud adoption is driving significant benefits for enterprises accessing services in Germany, with the greater the level of cloud maturity the better the level of business outcomes. This includes strategic business outcomes such as improved revenue growth and more strategic allocation of IT budgets, as well as tactical benefits including lower IT costs, reduced time to provision IT services, and increased ability to meet SLAs.

The availability of Azure in Germany means organisations can consume off-site services in an environment which is consistent with their existing on-site Microsoft environments. When connected via a Colt private network, customers can enjoy a seamless and secure hybrid environment and all the benefits of improved business outcomes.
