Colt deploys new modular data centre in its flagship facility in France
Published by Make Do on June 25, 2012
The new data centre which was delivered and went live at the end of May 2012 has a proven industry leading design Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.21. This represents a significant improvement over many traditional data centres and could result in significant cost savings for customers. Some traditional data centres have a PUE as high as 2.50 and based on these levels, a 500m2 modular data hall centre with an IT load of 750kW and taking into consideration inflation at five percent per annum, could result in a cost saving of 3.6 million Euro, over 10 years in power bills in France.
Colt’s Paris facilty is utilisied by a number of key customers as their primary data centre site and has acted as a disaster recovery data centre for many years. The site has extra capacity for another eight double-stacked, 500m2 modular data centre halls and is strategically located close to major arterial routes outside the city’s main ring-roads. This means if there is an emergency in the capital, the data centre will remain unaffected. The data centre is conveniently positioned just 2km from the nearest railway line and 12km from the nearest airport, making it easily accessible from across Europe.
“We are seeing increased demand for data storage in France and have been able to address this quickly and cost effectively with our modular solution. More importantly, we can deliver even more capacity on demand, as required in the future.” said Bernard Geoghegan, Executive Vice President at Colt. “Business is changing at an ever increasing rate, data volumes are soaring and applications are changing and growing by the hour.. Together with our ability to deliver a data centre to a customer site within 4 months and with financial flexibility, we are creating a platform for businesses to remain competitive even as the rate of change is accelerating.”
This deployment in Paris provides immediate capacity for companies responding to changes in their business. The capacity can be leased through operating expenditure allowing customers to be flexible and agile without capital outlay.
The carrier neutral status of the data centre ensures customers are able to connect to the network provider best suited to their commercial needs and this coupled with the sites 20 MVA of power guarantees they will have more than enough power to support their growing business and equipment needs today and in the future.
Colt has been an established player in the provision of high-specification data centre facilities for more than 15 years, with a portfolio of 20 data centres (including one in development) and managing over 28,000m2 of data centre space across Europe.
