Embracing neurodiversity: Our journey to a more inclusive and innovative workplace
Published by Colt Technology Services on July 3, 2024
Inclusivity is at the heart of our core values and over the last year we’ve stepped up our focus on how we can better support our neurodivergent colleagues. Did you know that up to 30% of the population is considered to be neurodivergent?
Neurodiversity is a critical element of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) and DE&I is a key part of our ESG strategy to create an innovative, exceptional and inclusive workplace. ESG initiatives will only be truly successful if there is a sharp focus on DE&I as it lays the foundation for long-term sustainability.
By embracing and investing in neurodiversity, we are enhancing inclusivity and diversity and enriching our culture. We know that neurodivergent individuals bring unique strengths and perspectives that drive innovation and problem-solving; they aren’t just positive additions to the workplace but a proven competitive advantage.
By providing appropriate adjustments and understanding for our neurodivergent colleagues, we are helping to improve well-being and retention, boost productivity and create a more supportive work environment.
Here are some of the measures we have implemented over the last year to increase neurodiversity awareness, as highlighted in our 2023 Sustainability Report:
- We published neurodiversity toolkits: One guide for Colties who want to seek further information about neurodiversity and what support is available and one guide for managers who want to know more about how to support their neurodivergent colleagues
- We trained our people and culture function on how to recruit and support neurodivergent employees and ensure a best practice approach to adjustments
- We collaborated with Uptimize to host fireside chats, educating our people further on neurodiversity and fostering better understanding
- We’ve added more items to our assistive technology catalogue that support our neurodivergent colleagues such as tools to help with reading, writing and focussing
- We’re looking at how we can use AI tools to support those who are neurodivergent such as Microsoft Copilot
- We consulted with our Workplace Services Team to improve accessibility in our offices such as installing quiet zones
- We are part of the #ChangeTheFace Alliance which aims to increase diversity and inclusion in the tech sector and we took part in their neurodiversity research study alongside Nokia, Samsung and Vodafone
We have made great progress over the last year with activities under our four DE&I pillars but we know there is always more to do. Going forwards, we will continue to find ways to provide greater sensitivity to individual needs.
