From TDM to VoIP

While VoIP markets are further emerging, global carriers and service providers find more requests from end-customers who are looking for a smooth migration from their traditional Voice infrastructure to future-proof VoIP services.

With Colt’s pan-European network coverage and unique portfolio, we are the perfect partner for global carriers and service providers. We support hybrid business models with end-customers who have TDM in some markets and VoIP in others, who may be looking for a consolidation of their services onto VoIP.

To illustrate what we can do for you, let’s look into one of our recent customer examples: Our customer is a US-based carrier who has an end-customer in the pharmaceutical industry with multiple sites all over Europe. The end-customer voice footprint has evolved site by site, country by country over time with a mix of voice services, including direct voice connections and pre-selection. The end-customer wanted to leverage their LAN & WAN investment by migrating voice to a fully featured VoIP service and enjoy the many benefits of a modern Unified Communications solution.

Because all of the countries in scope were outside of our customer’s home market they asked us to help them migrate their end-customer to one seamless VoIP solution, which was tailored to their needs. We recommended a two-step approach:

      • Firstly we set up a centralised SIP trunking solution – based on our Colt VoIP Access service – delivered to our customer over their existing MPLS infrastructure.
      • Secondly we migrated the end-customer from their existing heterogeneous voice services to the new SIP-based solution on a site by site basis.

To ensure a smooth transition, a dedicated Colt project manager planned and synchronised each migration step directly with the end-customer, as an extension to the customer’s team. All sites were switched to the SIP service. Previously preselected numbers were ported to Colt and all numbers were enabled on the SIP trunks over weekends and evenings.

The project was a success, as the end-customer stated: “Before we started with the project our pan-European sites were connected via a variety of TDM services including fixed access and carrier pre-selection. Colt project management has assured that all sites were migrated to SIP technology seamlessly and without any disruption to our business.”
Having completed the customer migration in Colt’s 13 core countries, the next step is already planned: to migrate the sites and numbers to SIP in e.g. the Czech Republic & Luxembourg.

If you have end-customers, demanding to migrate to VoIP, we would be more than happy to discuss, how we can support you with their transition. We have more than 20 years of expertise supplying full regulatory compliant voice, VoIP & IN services including emergency call routing and lawful intercept in all countries in which we operate.
