Hitachi

Building a secure, stable and scalable internet environment for mission‑critical public services

Who They Are

Since its founding in 1910, Hitachi, Ltd. has worked to address evolving societal challenges under its corporate philosophy of contributing to society through the development of original technologies and products. More than a century later, the Hitachi Group has grown into a global enterprise generating around 10 trillion yen in revenue with 300,000 employees worldwide. Hitachi operates across a broad range of sectors and delivers digital solutions that include value‑added social infrastructure, fully leveraging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data analytics, and advanced control and operations systems.

Colt offers a high-quality network and security measures as a one-stop solution, which helps us build a stable IT infrastructure, which is expected to be in perfect condition at all times. Colt is a trusted network partner that is always there for us when we have technical questions or we need advice. - Hiroyasu Mori, Senior Director Public Platform Solution Operation, Hitachi, Ltd.

Why Colt

For more than 50 years, Hitachi’s public systems division has provided IT support to public agencies, local governments, research institutions and educational organisations. To deliver essential services such as website access, email and DNS, Hitachi needed a highly secure, stable network environment capable of preventing unexpected disruptions, cyberattacks or latency issues.

To meet the demanding requirements of central government agencies, Hitachi selected Colt IP Access as its main ISP line and Colt IP Guardian to further strengthen security. Deploying both services together eliminated the need for additional on‑premises hardware and software, enabling Hitachi to use them as a “network with built‑in security features.” This approach delivers strong cost efficiency — a key reason Hitachi chose Colt.

Among several providers considered, Colt stood out as the partner best positioned to address both security enhancement and cost optimisation.

“Colt was the best partner to strengthen security while also achieving cost efficiency,” said Ms. Sakaguchi.
“Because Colt owns its network end to end, it can offer complete support. If issues arise, Colt shares detailed information immediately and proposes optimal solutions — sometimes even developing new ones for each project.” — Ms. Katsumata

“Instead of simply delivering a network, Colt provides full data centre functions, handling service operations and equipment management together. We are pleased that this significantly improved our operational efficiency.” — Mr. Mori

Future plans

The rapid advancement of technologies such as IoT and AI continues to reshape industries and daily life. Hitachi intends to expand its business further, contributing to value creation under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through its social innovation initiatives.

“The amount of data will grow exponentially as technologies evolve. To transmit large volumes of data quickly and reliably, strengthening networks and IT infrastructures becomes increasingly important. We believe Colt’s secure, high‑quality network will continue to support us,” said Ms. Katsumata.

Hitachi expects cloud‑by‑default adoption to accelerate as digital transformation progresses. “Central administrative organisations are becoming more open to cloud computing. More customers are considering migrating from on‑premises to cloud. We are exploring Colt’s cloud connectivity solutions to enable flexible use of cloud infrastructures,” said Mr. Ijiro.

Hitachi’s public systems division will continue expanding globally, leveraging the expertise developed through serving Japan’s public‑sector customers. Organisations with international operations increasingly require SD WAN services to access databases hosted in Japan, and demand is growing for networks that ensure consistent governance across varied security policies.

“We see strong demand for an end‑to‑end network that maintains governance across all endpoints. As we expand our service offerings, we look forward to co‑creating new solutions with Colt,” said Mr. Mori.
