Overview

High bandwidth connectivity with deterministic latency for enterprise and wholesale

Wavelength services enable ultra-high bandwidth network connections (up to 400Gbps), all deployed over the Colt IQ network with speed and ease. This enables you to leverage market opportunities and meet the challenge of the rising bandwidth demand driven by the Internet, richer application environments and cloud computing.

FAQs

Colt Ethernet is best suited for bandwidth levels at Mbps level up to 100Gbps in some areas, while Colt Wave starts from 1Gbps but is best suited in the range 10 to 400Gpbs and more in near future. VLAN aggregation (Hub & Spoke topology) can be achieved with Ethernet, while Wave supports Wavelength aggregation on a higher bandwidth level. Ethernet supports sub-rating (e.g. 5G bandwidth on a 10G port) while Wave supports full transparency at port rates.

Colt supports Fibre Channel services in both Wave and Private Wave soluitions, for the following speeds: 1Gbps, 2Gbps, 4Gbps, 8Gbps, 10Gbps, 16Gbps and 32Gbps.

FICON is a higher layer storage service protocol and is supported by Colt's transparent Fibre Channel services.

Colt supports OTU2, OTU2e and OTU4 services with GCC2 transparency. OTU1 and OTU3, as well as other configurations, are not supported.

We support 1Gbps, 10Gbps, 100Gbps and 400Gbps as standard with 800Gbps next in our roadmap. 40Gbps can be achieved as a solution, but we recommend customers considering 100Gbps instead, which is a more future-proof option. Other bandwidth options such as 2Gbps, 5Gbps, 25Gbps, 50Gbps, 200Gbps, and all sub-rated variants (like 2G on a 10G port) can't be supported.

If more than one of the following criteria are met, Private Wave could be a reasonable option:

  • Metro or Regional scope
  • More than one (ideally more than 3) high-bandwidth (10Gpb+) services are required
  • Multiple Fibre Channel services are included
  • Set of requirements with resilience, encryption and other features
  • Need for guaranteed scalability
  • Higher level of security and privacy with dedicated links and hardware
  • More control on network design (P2P, Ring, Mesh etc.)

There is a sweet spot for capacity for Spectrum: 1 or a few 100G for individual 50GHz Spectrum channels with distances up to 100km (in some cases up to 2,000km). Or for Flexible Grid Spectrum, a capacity demand in the range of 800Gbps up to 5Tbps. Below that, Wave might be the better option; above that, often a direct fibre build can be beneficial. Colt Spectrum could still be a good solution to bridge the gap until the fibre route is built, or if there issues to get fibre and amp container space. Also, Spectrum has the benefit of service flexibility (multiple 100GE or OTU4 or 400GE clients can be deployed) and gives more control and visibility for network providers who are reselling their client services.
