Wires only ("routerless") IP Access

IP Access On Demand services are supported on standard On Demand ports in data centres and enterprise locations. IP Access connectivity is available at on-net and off-net buildings in the following locations in Europe, Asia Pacific and North America. Bandwidths up to 10Gbps are now supported across all locations.

On-net locations
(connected with Colt Fibre)
Europe Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechia, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom
Asia Pacific Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore
North America Canada, USA
Off-net locations
(connected via a carrier partner)
Europe Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom
Asia Pacific Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore

Customers benefit from the same carrier class internet experience as standard Colt IP Access service (which is based on market-leading internet peering) with the added benefit of flexible contract options and standard On Demand features such as rapid bandwidth upgrades.

The service is based on a “wires-only” implementation, meaning customers are required to provide a router at the data centre or enterprise building where the On Demand port terminating the IP Access service is located. Connecting the IP Access service directly to the customer’s LAN without is not currently supported and will result in a misconfiguration.

The location of the port determines the location of Colt’s core IP router that is used to parent the IP Access service. For example, and IP Access service terminating on an On Demand port in Frankfurt will be parented from Colt’s core IP router based in Frankfurt.

Under the On Demand model, IP Access services are treated as circuit connections that can be terminated on a standard port in a data centre or enterprise building. The IP Access connection port can presented on a dedicated port (i.e. one IP Access per port) or on a multi-service port where other DCNet, Ethernet and Cloud On Demand connections are terminated.

The provisioning journey for IP Access is straightforward; customers simply have to choose:

An existing port to terminate the service

A VLAN configuration (open port, add VLAN, filter VLAN)

Service bandwidth

Contractual commitment (1 hour flex, or 3-36 month fixed term)

All other configuration parameters (for example, IP address ranges) are automatically applied by the On Demand platform.

Once an IP Access On Demand connection is live, customers are able to upgrade the bandwidth permanently (via a fixed contract), upgrade or downgrade the bandwidth temporarily (via a flex contract) and change the VLAN parameters or contractual commitment.

Note that the bandwidth scheduling (calendar) feature is not currently supported on IP Access connections.

Managed IP Access (via a Virtual On Demand Router) NEW

Managed IP Access services based on a virtual instance (vRouter) are now supported via Colt On Demand.

The managed IP Access service is available in all on-net and off-net locations in the UK and France, with support for additional countries planned for later in 2024.

The service is available in bandwidths from 10Mbps to 1Gbps.

IP Addresses

Colt provides a /30 range for the WAN connection, the first usable IP address being the IP address allocated to the port on the Colt core IP router.

When an IP Access On Demand connection is activated, Colt will allocate a block of /29 Provider Aggregated (PA) addresses based on IPV4 which can be used on the LAN side of the customer equipment (router, firewall, Access Point,...).

Additional IP addresses are not supported via IP Access On Demand.

The Colt AS is 8220.

The addresses for the primary/secondary DNS servers used by Colt are shown below:

Primary DNS server 195.110.64.205
Secondary DNS server 212.121.128.10

IP backbone network

Colt has made a substantial investment in the creation of a dedicated IP-based network to provide flexible, scalable IP-based solutions to the mission-critical Internet needs of our customers.

Colt is also a key participant in major European and Asian direct and indirect peering and partnership agreements, enhancing its capability to provide customers with the highest levels of service worldwide.

IP Access On Demand services are based on the same network platform as traditional IP Access services.
