London, 14 June 2013

Colt, Europe’s leading information delivery platform, has won the 2013 International Datacentre & Cloud Award for its energy efficiency programme. The award win recognises Colt’s continuous commitment and dedication to redefining and improving data centre efficiency across its European data centre estate. Over a three year period, the programme reduced annual electricity usage by a fifth (43 gigawatt hours)* resulting in savings of €4m in power costs per annum.

“We are delighted with this award win which recognises our continued efforts to deliver sustained energy efficiency savings,” said Ian Dixon, VP of Data Center Operations at Colt. “Improving energy savings in our data centres is firmly embedded in the mind-set of our engineers and is something our customers have come to expect and appreciate. This in itself is very rewarding and a testament to the success of the project – from planning through to implementation.”

Now in its 6th year, these prestigious awards are recognised as the premier industry accolade for the data centre industry across Europe and are judged by experts from across the region.

“This year’s award winner needed to demonstrate real and measurable efficiencies across the business,“ said Steve Wallage, Managing Director, Broadgroup. “Colt has set an example for the entire industry to follow by demonstrating how, through a well-defined programme of efficiency improvement measures, massive efficiencies and cost savings can be achieved, debunking the myth that driving energy efficiencies are dependent on heavy investment.”

Colt’s ongoing energy efficiency programme spans 30,000m2 of data centre space across Europe. The Europe-wide programme initially focused on data halls, targeting projects that delivered large, upfront gains in energy efficiency over a relatively short period of time. These projects accounted for most of the savings Colt achieved during the first twelve months of the programme while infrastructural projects requiring greater investment accounted for a significant proportion of savings in years two and three.
