Connecting to Oracle with Colt On Demand

HomeWhitepaperConnecting to Oracle Cloud with Colt On Demand

An introduction to the On Demand cloud experience

Cloud computing delivers well known benefits, but the end-user experience can only ever be as good as the network it’s reliant on. Cloud connectivity delivered over poor-quality networks, provisioned and consumed in the “old school” telco mode can have adverse effects, both on the migration and adoption phases of enterprise cloud deployments. This is where Colt On Demand cloud connectivity can benefit enterprises; offering a portal-based, real-time, self-provisioning and flexible experience over a best-in-class network infrastructure.

Oracle has built its Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) offering to support the functionality and performance that enterprises have in their data centres. It supports traditional workloads and delivers modern cloud development tools. OCI is architected to detect and defend against modern threats, with high performance and low costs. It offers a comprehensive cloud computing portfolio, from application development and business analytics to data management, integration, security, artificial intelligence (AI), and blockchain.

How On Demand networking can optimise the cloud experience

Establishing a Colt On Demand, dedicated  connection to OCI from your data centre, office or co-location environment reduces provisioning times, helps reduce network costs, increases bandwidth throughput, and provides a more consistent network experience than Internet or VPN-based connections.

You might utilise Oracle Cloud capabilities in one of the following scenarios:

  • Running hybrid cloud environments
  • Migrating from on-premises to cloud
  • Running simultaneous workloads in Oracle Cloud and with other cloud service providers
  • Migrating services from one cloud to another
How to move critical workloads to the cloud with Colt and Oracle

Connectivity provides the foundation for all these scenarios. Oracle provides migration tools that simplify migrations from on-premises workloads to the cloud. However, for many users, it’s not only about the migration; they also want fast continual archiving, fast archive retrieval, and disaster recovery. Whatever the use case, the move to cloud brings with it, challenges associated with  security, latency, and reliability.

With Colt On Demand, customers can connect to Oracle Cloud across EMEA, APAC, and North America from more than 29,000 enterprise locations and 900+ data centres.

On Demand offers a number of benefits including online ordering, rapid service delivery & bandwidth flexing and supports both traditional multi-year fixed term contracts and a new flexible commercial model.

Customers can benefit from a range of connectivity options, which includes single/multicloud solutions and high bandwidth connectivity up to 10Gbps towards Oracle Cloud; all delivered over Colt’s global IQ network.

Enterprises considering running a Proof of Concept (PoC) with Oracle Cloud can also take advantage of Colt’s On Demand for OCI PoC connectivity offering – delivering private, secure, high-bandwidth connectivity to Oracle Cloud on a short term basis to support the Oracle Cloud PoC period

Your step-by-step guide to connecting your On-Premises network to Oracle Cloud with Colt On Demand

Oracle have put together a guide which provides all the necessary steps for configuring a FastConnect link from Oracle Cloud Infrastructure to an on-premises router by using Colt’s Dedicated Cloud Access On Demand service.

Before You Begin

You need accounts in both Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and Colt.

On the on-premises side of the connection, you'll need administrator access to the router that will serve as the customer premises equipment (CPE). In the post, we use a Cisco CSR.

You must also meet the following prerequisites in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure:

You can read the full guide to configure a FastConnect link from Oracle Cloud Infrastructure to an on premises router using Colt On Demand on Oracle’s website. If you’re interested in learning more about Colt On Demand and OCI FastConnect, take a look at our demo video.

Further, Colt offers free, OCI-Client Connectivity Design workshops. Our network solution professionals can review your on-premise workload requirements, assess your connectivity needs and recommend cloud optimised solutions.
