Colt to build major new energy efficient data centre in the Netherlands

London, 27 April 2012
Colt, Europe’s leading information delivery platform, today announced its first modular data centre deployment in the Netherlands on a 39,000m2 site. Colt will initially deploy 2,000m2 of data centre space at the site, before increasing its capacity to 20 halls over 10,000m2. With a significant anchor tenant already secured, Colt expects to commence operations at the new carrier neutral data centre in early 2013.The site will further expand Colt’s modular data centre capabilities, adding to its existing London and Paris sites and is strategically located between the major cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Antwerp and Brussels, where it will act as a key hub for the delivery of Colt’s low latency services in the region. For security purposes, the site is also strategically located away from the Netherlands’ low-lying areas to minimise flood risk which, together with the Colt modular data centre’s reputation for quality, means customers can be confident that their information is protected.“We are delighted to be expanding our footprint in Europe. Given its strategic location between four of Europe’s major cities, the site offers an ideal location for our first modular data centre deployment in the Netherlands,” said Bernard Geoghegan, Executive Vice President at Colt Data Centre Services. “We have already secured a major organisation as anchor tenant for the site and have seen substantial interest from other companies from across the Benelux region. The expansion capability of the site together with our unique modular approach means our customers will be able to scale and add additional capacity as demand requires.”

The entire Colt modular data centre, including all power and cooling elements, will be constructed and tested in the UK, using modern component based production line techniques before being transported to the site. This unique approach provides Colt the flexibility to expand the data centre in increments. Colt has secured a 32MVA power connection to ensure scalability of the energy supply as the data centre grows in size and requirements. When complete, the site will offer secure, flexible, scalable and carrier neutral data centre facilities to customers.

“Organisations embracing a modular approach to building and expanding their data centres will see cost savings in terms of scalability, energy efficiency and time to market,” commented Jason Schafer, Research Manager, Tier1 Research. “The latest modular designs also allow organisations to benefit from what traditional data centres have to offer while avoiding some of the pitfalls usually associated with new builds.”

Colt has been an established player in the provision of high-specification data centre facilities for more than 15 years, currently operating 19 data centres and managing over 28,000m2 of data centre space across Europe.
