Esade supports its critical services with Colt’s connectivity solutions

ESADE, one of Europe’s leading business schools, needed a reliable and secure connectivity solution to support its critical digital services. By partnering with Colt, ESADE strengthened its infrastructure, ensuring uninterrupted access and high performance for students and staff.

Esade is a globally recognised academic institution, delivering top-tier education to over 15,000 students each year — 40% of whom are international. With three buildings in Barcelona and a new campus in Madrid, the business school needed a connectivity solution capable of supporting its critical services with reliable and robust IP access.

In 2025, the Financial Times ranked Esade’s Full-Time MBA programme 8th in the world and 5th in Europe. The university now boasts a network of over 70,000 alumni.

The challenge was to ensure high-quality IP access across all four campuses, enabling students and faculty to access essential academic and administrative services. With resources hosted both in the cloud and on-premises, Esade required a stable, high-availability connection to support its operations.

Following a thorough selection process, Esade chose Colt to deliver a comprehensive IP access solution across its sites. Miguel López Luque, Head of IT Systems at Esade, explains:
“Our main goal was to reduce dependency on our previous provider. We were looking for a flexible partner who could deliver the solutions we needed. Colt has proven to be that partner, offering the flexibility and performance we required.”

Colt’s solution enabled Esade to diversify its communications and enhance interconnectivity between buildings, resulting in a more resilient and efficient network. At the Pedralbes headquarters in Barcelona, Colt deployed around-the-clock IP access, providing 256 addresses to support a wide range of applications.

Across all sites, Colt implemented IP access that ensures optimal performance for critical services. After a successful initial deployment, Colt was invited to participate in a broader tender to provide IP access across all campuses.

Following a competitive evaluation, Colt was selected to deliver connectivity to all four academic centres, including the new Madrid campus, which has been operating on Colt’s network since its opening. López Luque highlights the strong performance of the lines, particularly in terms of latency and jitter.

“To ensure redundancy, we publish the same services via Colt’s IP as we do through RedIRIS, Spain’s academic and research network. These are critical services for us, directly impacting students. It’s essential that they run smoothly and with strong performance,” says López Luque, referring to Esade’s web portals, student resources, and Wi-Fi access across buildings.

He also praises the ease of implementation and Colt’s ability to adapt to Esade’s internal processes. The migration process was so seamless that most staff were unaware it had taken place, with no service interruptions or downtime.

Looking ahead, Esade’s IT focus will be on managing data flows. Ensuring that connections perform efficiently and bandwidth is used effectively is a top priority.

Traffic is expected to grow. “I see increased network usage as everything becomes more digital. It’s likely that our current bandwidth will eventually fall short, and we’ll need to scale up. If that happens, I’m confident Colt will respond quickly and efficiently at any of our fibre-connected sites,” López Luque adds.

“Our internal processes can be complex, but Colt made everything easy. They adapted flexibly to our needs and delivered a well-structured rollout. Every stage was carefully planned and executed. We’re very satisfied with the results,” concludes Miguel López Luque.
